Charles Dawson's 'discovery' of the Piltdown Man Skull in East Sussex (1912) claimed to be the "missing link" between ape and man. What it in fact turned out to be is one of the biggest scientific frauds of the 20th century. The skull still remains an object of great fascinating and questions the notion of what a 'real' museum object is, and is not.
