Kendall-Frost Mission Bay Reserve Annual Report

This is the only good sample of bay marsh that will likely persist in southern California. A small laboratory has been proposed and funded for early construction. Extensive use of this prime reserve has been made by resident and visiting scientists and graduate research students of Scripps Institution, covering various phases of the biology, geology, and general ecology of the marsh. Among the users have been Dr. Alfred C. Redfield, of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, an outstanding researcher on salt marshes, J. R. Schubel of the Johns Hopkins University, Fred B. Phleger, Andrew A. Benson, K. B. Macdonald (doctoral research), John S. Bradshaw (2 publications) Claude E. ZoBell, R. W. Thompson, Douglas L. Inman, and Carl L. Hubbs. For several years the marsh has been utilized extensively for teaching and some research by other schools in the San Diego area. Prof. Keith W. Radforcl of Mesa College reports that field trips to the area of the Reserve, with controlled and rather minimal movements over the marsh itself, have been made by him with classes in sections of about 5O students per year in "Natural History of Southern California" (ecological, plant and animal studies), and about 50 per year in "Vertebrate Zoology " (chiefly on birds and fishes). The marsh area has also been utilized. Charles F. Phieger conducted a study on the marsh for his master's thesis at San Diego State College.
