In November 2007 PSI Somaliland conducted a baseline household survey designed to provide evidence for social marketing decision-making. The study had two objectives: 1) measure levels of mosquito net use, particularly insecticide treated nets (ITNs) and the opportunity, ability and motivation to use, and 2) identify the drivers and inhibitors of mosquito net use and ownership. In September 2007, PSI began distributing Badbaado insecticide-treated mosquito nets at a subsidized price through the private sector using the existing wholesaler-retailer supply chain. Communication campaigns have been developed to promote both the Badbaado brand and general awareness of malaria. A cross sectional household survey was conducted among households with children under five years and the general population aged 15-49. A multi-stage cluster sampling approach was used to sample 1570 households and individuals across four of the six Somaliland regions, namely Maroodi Jeex (formerly known as Woqoyi Galbeed), Sahil, Togdheer and Awdal.
