Eight months have been required in sinking the shaft, which is in the rich Signal Hill field near Long Beach, and the downward drilling will be continued as long as it is possible mechanically. In the center of this picture is shown the derrick and hoisting machinery by means of which the "deepest hole in the world" was drilled".
