Challenges at Workplace and Institutional Support: Lived Experiences of Young Working Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders

This qualitative study examined the employment experiences of ten Malaysian young working adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews exploring participants’ pathways into work, workplace challenges, communication difficulties, stress, organisational support, and experiences of inclusion or marginalisation. The data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, which generated five themes related to late diagnosis, limited early support, family encouragement, inadequate vocational training, workplace communication challenges, supervisory neglect, and supportive workplace practices. Ethical approval was obtained before data collection, informed consent was secured from all participants, and confidentiality and anonymity were maintained.
