MSCI’s Private Capital Indexes data provides asset owners, asset managers, and General Partners with the most accurate insights into private capital returns, enabling unrivaled benchmarking of private capital funds and portfolios.

The 132 distinct indexes cover the spectrum of private capital asset classes, including private equity and venture capital, private debt, and private real assets—both globally and by region. As of Q3 2023, the indexes cover over 12,000 funds with a total capitalization of more than $10.0 trillion.

Source: MSCI's Private Capital Indexes data come from our Private Capital Universe (PCU) dataset, which includes data from private capital funds, funds of funds, and their holdings dating from 1978. The dataset is unfrozen and gets reconstructed four times a year due to the unique nature of private capital data and the associated reporting challenges. As part of the reconstruction process, new data is added, and transaction history is updated through the latest available quarter end date.

The PCU documents quarterly returns and cash flows from inception for almost 14,000 funds, totaling a capitalization of more than $10 trillion. It also covers over 240,000 fund holdings with a current total valuation of over $5 trillion. Every quarter, about 70-80% of active funds report their latest values, which allows for the preliminary calculation of quarterly returns based on this data.

The PCU is completely impartial as data is sourced solely from institutional investors around the world who rely on MSCI’s data and analytics services to manage their private capital portfolios. No data is sourced via voluntary manager data submissions, web scraping, or Freedom of Information Act requests. The dataset includes only closed-end funds with manager discretion over cash flows and excludes hedge funds, open-ended funds, and other related vehicles such as directs and co-investments. The PCU includes fund cash flows that are directly from Limited Partners (LPs), providing an accurate representation of their investment experience.
