BIOL 2050 lab 2 data set - maple tree and sapling comparison

This experiment took place in the woodland lot at York University. Maple trees were the tree of choice for the measurements. A maple tree and the nearest sapling was chosen as a pair. A sapling was defined as a tree that is less than or equal to half of the observer's height (175 cm). The distance between the tree and the sapling was measured and recorded. The diameters of the tree and the sapling were measured by placing a transect at the observer's breast height. The canopy cover of the non-sapling was measured by approximating how much percent area the upper leaves and branches cover when the observer made a square shape with his hands and pointed it directly upwards.

本实验在约克大学（York University）的林地样地中开展。实验选取枫树作为目标测量树种，以单株成树与其邻近的幼树作为一组配对样本。本实验中幼树的定义为树高不超过观测者身高（175cm）一半的树木。随后测量并记录该组成树与幼树之间的水平距离。通过在观测者胸高位置布设测量带（transect），分别测定成树与幼树的胸径。对于非幼树（即成树）的冠层覆盖度，采用如下方法测定：观测者双手搭成正方形并竖直向上指向天空，以此估算此时上方叶片与枝条所覆盖的面积百分比。
