Beetle dataset in forest edges and closed-stand forests

We utilised 2-directional flight interception traps (FITs) to record beetle movement in the forest edge. The FITs are plastic foils of 140 cm in width and 70 cm in height and they were positioned directly at ground level by affixing them to trees. Beetles were collected in 12.5 x 15 cm plastic trays placed on the ground adjacent to FITs, containing monopropylene glycol for specimen preservation. The FITs were transparent and did not attract artificially floricolous beetles, ensuring an unbiased sampling of beetle flight activity. The samples collected from the two FITs in the edge were divided into four subsamples, categorized as either ‘edge inwards’ (beetles flying from the clearing into the forest) or ‘edge outwards’ (beetles flying from the forest towards the clearing). Each edge FIT thus yielded four distinct subsamples—two ‘edge inwards’ and two ‘edge outwards,’ corresponding to its respective sides. In contrast, the FIT placed in the closed-canopy forest was not subdivided, serving instead as a baseline reference for beetle assemblages in an undisturbed forest environment. The sampling period was conducted in 2021 and 2022 in PLA Cerová vrchovina Upland, PLA Pálava and Podyjí National Park. Additionally, in 2022 we sampled Slovenský kras National Park. This setup enabled us to compare diversity metrics and species turnover between distinct microhabitats at the forest edge.
