Microbial communities in the open ocean play key roles in global carbon and nutrient cycles. In the surface ocean gradients in light, temperature and nutrient and metal availability determine the vertical distribution of different microbial community members with depth. This project seeks to understand the genetic diversity, evolutionary relationships and functional capacities of marine microbes at different depths in a South Atlantic water column.
