To address NMP recalcitrance to methanation and microbial toxicity in high ammonia nitrogen industrial wastewater, a coupled system integrating partial denitrification-anammox and partial nitrification-anammox was established. This study explored NMP degradation pathway in the coupled system and its influences on nitrogen removal performance. Experimental results showed that NMP was synergistically decomposed in the partial denitrification-anammox zone, significantly mitigating its biotoxicity to microbial communities. The coupled system achieved high total nitrogen removal efficiency.Specific functional microorganisms were identified in both zones, which played core roles in NMP degradation and nitrogen removal respectively. This study provides technical support for low-cost treatment of high ammonia nitrogen and low carbon nitrogen ratio industrial wastewater containing NMP via the coupled process.
