The purpose of this experiment was to quantitatively determine tree species distribution and abundance in an environment using random sampling as well as look at physical characteristics. My partner Phaeba and I compared distances, conditions and diameter of 10 adult trees in the woodlot of York University. The first adult tree encountered on the left side when walking straight into the woodlot was used to collect data. The second tree used to collect data was the one directly in front of the first and was also used as a reference point to collect data for the remainder of the trees. All data collected for the remainder of the trees were the first ones encountered when walking straight in front of tree 2 and into the middle of the woodlot. Consistency and reliability were accounted for because of this. The experiment was carried out on September 25, 2015 at approximately 4:07PM with weather being around 20 degrees Celsius. The experiment was done at approximately 4:50PM. Transect measuring tape was used to collect data. For the first two pairs of trees, there were a lot of garbage and dead leaves on the ground. The sky was clear and there were a small amount of vegetation on the ground. Going further into the middle of the wood lot to collect the remainder of data, it was chillier and it was less sunny. There were less garbage on the ground, acorns and more vegetation on the ground.
