STRUCTURAL HETEROGENEITY: AN ANALYSIS ACCORDING TO SIZE, SECTOR AND AGE OF BRAZILIAN INDUSTRIAL COMPANIES (2007-2016)

ABSTRACT Several recent studies show that structural heterogeneity is an important feature of the Brazilian manufacturing sector. This paper carries out a statistical analysis of heterogeneity examining the Brazilian manufacturing structure in terms of firm size, age, and sector of activity, from 2007 to 2016. Our descriptive analysis used datasets extracted from Pesquisa Industrial Anual Empresa (PIA/Empresa) and Cadastro Central de Empresas (CEMPRE), both collected by the IBGE, the Brazilian official statistics bureau. The analysis of the labor productivity indicator shows that structural heterogeneity goes beyond firm size, being likewise significant in terms of firm's age and sector of activity. In addressing the issues of firm size and longevity, our work contributes to discussing the situation of domestic manufacturing sectors in the ongoing deindustrialization of the Brazilian economy.摘要：近期多项研究表明，结构异质性是巴西制造业的重要特征之一。本文以2007至2016年为研究时段，从企业规模、存续年限与行业门类三个维度，对巴西制造业结构展开异质性统计分析。本次描述性分析所用数据集提取自年度工业企业调查（Pesquisa Industrial Anual Empresa，缩写PIA/Empresa）与企业中央登记库（Cadastro Central de Empresas，缩写CEMPRE），二者均由巴西官方统计机构IBGE采集。对劳动生产率指标的分析结果显示，结构异质性不仅体现在企业规模维度，在企业存续年限与行业门类维度同样具有显著影响。本文在探讨企业规模与存续年限相关议题的基础上，可为分析巴西经济持续去工业化进程中的国内制造业发展现状提供学术参考。
