Nitrification is consist of two step reactions, which is ammonia oxidation and nitrite oxidation. Nitrate produced by nitrite oxidation flows out into river and ground water, resulting that a part of fertilizers is not assimilated by crops in soils. Nitrite oxidizers related to Nitrobacter species are responsible for the second step of nitrification, which is dominant in acidic tea fields. However, the mechanism of nitrite oxidation in low pH environment remains big unknown. In this study, we aimed to isolate and characterize a novel Nitrobacter strain. Genomic analysis and physiological experiment elucidate the ecological niche and acid adaptation mechanism of the nitrite oxidizer.
