The goal of the NEON macroinvertebrate DNA barcoding project is to track changes in the diversity and composition of macroinvertebrates in aquatic ecosystems through space and time. NEON collects benthic macroinvertebrates from over 30 sites distributed across the United States. Total genomic DNA is extracted and the CO1 gene of the macroinvertebrate community is sequenced using high-throughput methods.
