Continuity of satellite net primary productivity data : Interim products and next steps for enhanced capabilities

This Technical Memorandum details the development and evaluation of interim satellite-derived net primary productivity (netPP) products to ensure data continuity following the scheduled decommissioning of the MODIS Aqua sensor in August 2026. The core objective was to create transitional products that closely replicate the existing legacy netPP product, which uses MODIS chlorophyll data and the Vertically Generalized Production Model (VGPM) algorithm. This project was funded by the Portfolio Management Branch of NOAA NESDIS and received additional support from NOAA CoastWatch and CSU COAST.
