This dataset contains original responses generated by five AI chatbot systems – ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity AI – to four identical research questions. The data were collected to support a comparative analysis of how different AI chatbots respond to the same prompts in a research‑related context. Each chatbot was queried using the same question wording, and responses were preserved in their original form, with only minimal formatting applied for readability. The dataset is organised by chatbot system: each chatbot has a dedicated folder containing four separate files corresponding to the four questions (Q1–Q4). An additional file provides the exact wording of all questions used in the study. A README file documents the dataset structure, data collection context, and usage notes. This dataset accompanies a research article entitled “AI Chatbots in Research Practice: Possibilities for Searching and Analysing Scientific Sources”, which has been submitted for peer review and is not yet published. A formal reference to the article will be added once it becomes available. All texts in the dataset are machine‑generated. The dataset reflects chatbot behaviour at the time of data collection (January 2025) and is intended to support transparency, reproducibility, and further research on AI‑generated responses.
