In the woodlot, the percent coverage of the canopy and distance to nearest sapling was measured for adult elm trees. Elm trees were selected at random from an area of approximately one hectare. A tree was determined to be adult at about three times the height of a human. The distances between saplings and adults were rounded to the nearest tenth of a meter. Canopy coverage was estimated by viewing the sky from the base of the tree through a square formed by my thumbs and index fingers. These two variables were recorded for ten adult elm trees.本研究于一片林地中，针对成年榆树（elm trees）测定了两项指标：冠层（canopy）覆盖率，以及与最近幼树（sapling）的距离。研究人员从约1公顷的区域内随机选取榆树样本。当树木高度约为成年人身高的三倍时，即判定为成年个体。幼树与成年榆树间的距离均经四舍五入，保留至十分之一米的精度。冠层覆盖率通过以下方式估算：从树木基部出发，借助研究者本人拇指与食指围成的正方形区域观测天空，以此完成冠层覆盖率的估算。本研究共为10株成年榆树记录了上述两项变量的相关数据。
