The dataset used in this paper is a synthetic dataset with a nonlinear response, where the response is learned by means of a neural network trained to count numbers in synthetic images assembled by placing digits from the MNIST dataset in a 4 × 4 grid.
本文所使用的数据集为一类带有非线性响应的合成数据集（synthetic dataset），其响应的学习任务由经训练的神经网络完成；此类合成图像通过将MNIST数据集（MNIST dataset）中的手写数字排布于4×4网格中拼接生成，而该神经网络的训练目标为统计这些合成图像内的数字总数。
