Writes to tell Mrs Voynich that it is his 27th birthday / thanks her for some chocolates she has sent and for her help with French vocabulary / says that he intends to take a walking trip of the country after the war, if possible / praises French courtesy and the beauty of their buildings / reports that the men sometimes speak badly of the towns, but only because there are no cinemas / inquires after Mrs Voynich's health and London / the possible pleasures of living away from one's friends / reports that he has managed not to be hurt, and that mentally he is feeling calmer / the disappearance of one of his friends in battle / discusses a book of poetry entitled 'Spirit of Man' / includes a draft of the poem 'Serenity' / discusses the serious and grand nature of living through this particular part of history.
