The 2021 Norwegian Sámi Parliamentary Election Study

The general aim of the project is to study the conditions for and the challenges of Sámi self-determination in Norway through an elected assembly – the Sámi Parliament. More specifically, we study the 2021 Sámi Parliamentary election in Norway. A main part of the project is a representative voter survey with a sample drawn from the electoral roll of the Sámi Parliament. This is a follow-up of previous surveys from 2009, 2013 and 2017. Key topics include: 1) The 2021 election: voting behaviour; 2) Political participation – in and between elections; 3) Political attitudes, including attitudes to self-determination and criteria for registration in the electoral roll; 4) Political trust and political interest; 5) The election campaign and the media; 6) Perceived discrimination; 7) Background variables. In addition to the variables from the questionnaire, the data file contains the following variables: electoral district (electoral district in the Sámi Parliamentary election), weight, knr_over250 (only the municipalities where more than 250 people are registered in the electoral roll are listed as individual values; all other municipalities are combined in a single aggregated category), ant_mantall (whether one is a resident in municipalities with 30 or more persons registered in the electoral roll, and thereby can vote on election day), and administrative area (whether one is resident in a municipality that is part of the administrative area for Sámi languages). The variables sex and age are also available as electoral roll variables, in addition to being asked about in the questionnaire. It is recommended to use the variables from the electoral roll. The dataset also contains a weight that is based on sex, age and electoral district, and this can be used to correct for biases due to non-response.
