Legal professionals often encounter voluminous legal judgments containing critical insights. Despite recent advances in automatic summarization solutions for legal documents, these approaches typically generate generic summaries that may fail to meet users' diverse information needs. To address this gap, we introduce LexAbSumm, a novel dataset designed for aspect-based summarization of legal case decisions, sourced from the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). We evaluate several abstractive summarization models tailored for long documents on LexAbSumm, revealing the inherent challenges of enabling these models to produce aspect-specific summaries. We release LexAbSumm to advance research on aspect-based summarization in the legal domain.
