A Mid-Saxon Site at Anderson's Road, Southampton (SOU1240)

Excavations and a watching brief were undertaken during redevelopment at Anderson's Road, Southampton in 2003-4. The Site lies on the southern edge of mid-Saxon Hamwic, close to the river, and incorporated SOU14 which had been excavated in 1973. There was slight evidence for late prehistoric and Romano-British activity, but the majority of features on the site comprised pits of mid-Saxon date which contained domestic and a limited range of craft/industrial waste. Medieval features were restricted to a few ditches, probably field boundaries, sealed by saltmarsh deposits that have now been shown to be of post-medieval date.

2003—2004年，南安普敦安德森路（Anderson's Road）片区的再开发工程期间，开展了考古发掘与现场跟踪监察作业。该遗址地处中撒克逊时期哈姆威克（Hamwic）的南部边缘，紧邻河道，包含1973年已完成发掘的SOU14遗址点。遗址中存在少量晚史前时期与罗马-不列颠时期人类活动的遗迹证据，但绝大多数考古遗迹为中撒克逊时期的坑穴，坑内出土有生活垃圾与品类有限的手工业/工业废弃物。中世纪考古遗迹仅存少量沟壕，大概率为田间界沟，这些沟壕被盐沼沉积层叠压，经研究确认该沉积层属于中世纪后时期形成。
