Phascolarctos cinereus isolate: "Birke" Genome sequencing and assembly

An ever increasing threat to the koala is disease, with most populations now suffering from chlamydiosis and the recent discovery of a retrovirus that is spreading through Australia's koala populations in real time and which may result in malignant neoplasias. In concert with our long read genome assembly of a female koala, we present a short read assembly of a male koala, "Birke", from Birkdale, Qld, euthanised on 26 Aug 2012 at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, Beerwah, Qld, suffering severe injuries from a car strike.
