Gloeocapsopsis dulcis strain AAB1, a xerotolerant cyanobacterium isolated from the driest nonpolar desert on Earth - the Atacama Desert - holds astrobiological significance due to its unique ability to biosynthesize compatible solutes at ultra-low water activities, suggesting a level of active metabolism well beyond the established limits. We sequenced and assembled the G. dulcis genome de novo, resulting in a high-quality consensus sequence with a quality score and consensus QV of 99.9999 and 61.22, respectively. We then leveraged the closed G. dulcis genome to generate a genome-scale metabolic model to simulate growth in silico.
