We tested whether microbial legacies caused by differences in microbial community composition across soil origins influenced plant-soil feedbacks between two grass species common in Texas grasslands, Schizachyrium scoparium and Bouteloua curtipendula. Specifically, we conducted a field-based plant-soil feedback experiment using soils from two different origins across three field planting locations in Texas that stretched across a strong precipitation gradient. To calculate plant-soil feedback, we measured plant biomass. To help disentangle the drivers of plant-soil feedback effects, soil fungal communities were sequenced at the beginning and end of the experiment and root microscopy was used to quantify evidence of disease and mycorrhizal colonization. The field experiment was paired with a greenhouse experiment testing how soil origin and drought influenced plant-soil feedbacks under more controlled conditions.
