Building on prior research demonstrating the transposed-character effect in word identification during sentence reading (using the boundary paradigm), which has been attributed to cognitive flexibility in character order processing, the present investigation extends understanding through systematic manipulation of semantic preview stimuli’s transition formats. The findings reveal two key insights: First, both semantic previews and their transposed stimuli produced equivalent preview benefits for subsequent target word identification. Second, compared to unrelated previews, transposed semantic previews conferred a distinct processing advantage. These results collectively suggest that cognitive flexibility in character order processing co-occurs with parafoveal semantic preview processing.

本研究基于此前一项采用边界范式（boundary paradigm）的研究，该工作揭示了句子阅读过程中词汇识别环节的换位字符效应（transposed-character effect），并将该效应归因于字符顺序加工的认知灵活性。本研究通过对语义预视刺激（semantic preview stimuli）的转换格式开展系统性操纵，进一步深化了学界对该领域的认知。研究结果揭示两项核心发现：其一，语义预视刺激及其换位刺激均能为后续目标词汇识别带来等效的预视效益（preview benefits）；其二，相较于无关预视刺激，换位式语义预视刺激可赋予加工过程显著的优势。上述结果共同表明，字符顺序加工的认知灵活性与副中央凹语义预视加工（parafoveal semantic preview processing）同步发生。
