VPRS 12187 Register of Certified Copies of Inquests

Established in 1856 the functions of Victorias public library have been to provide reference and research library services in its own building and a support service to municipal libraries. Historically this agency has been known as the Melbourne Public Library (1856-1869) and the Public Library of Victoria (1869-1960). Since 1960 the Library has been referred to as the State Library of Victoria.Since 1893 government departmental records had been accumulating in the Library. Before the establishment of the Public Record Office in 1973 the Library was responsible for selecting, arranging and describing public records.This series is a register recording photocopies of inquests. The register recorded the name of the person that requested the copy of the inquest, the number of pages to be copied, the date ordered, the date taken and the total cost. Prices were entered at the front of the volume.The volume contains information about monies received for the photocopying inquest files.This register would have formed part of the standard accounting records of the Library.
