The D5872 metagenome was derived from an indigenous low-diversity microbial community inhabiting warm saline formation pore water in the Cambrian Mt. Simon Sandstone within the Illinois Basin of the North American Midcontinent at 1.8 km burial depth. This microbial community is dominated by g-Proteobacteria that are phylogenetically closely related to Halomonas sulfidaeris.
