In 1803, the 27th Light Dragoons, serving in India, were renumbered as the 24th, following that unit's disbandment in the UK. Quite why troops were still being raised for the 27th two years later is unknown.
Fourteen members of the 24th/27th Light Dragoons were known to have been on board the Abergavenny, of whom ten were saved.
