This study investigates the proficiency of Chinese University EFL learners in identifying foreign languages and various English accents, as an indicator of their cross-cultural communication competence. An electronic survey encompassing 13 foreign language identification questions and 16 English accents questions is developed and administered to 454 EFL learners from 4 academic years in 3 different levels of universities in China. Each language or accent is further investigated through a paired audio and video questions, which share the same speech contents. A comparison is made to see whether visual aids improve the participants’ correct rates. The results show that the Chinese EFL learners’ overall identifying abilities of foreign languages and accents are unsatisfactorily below 50%, and that visual elements do aid to improve the correct identification rates in certain languages and accents. This study argues that in an era where AI technology is deeply and rapidly expanding, human beings’ ability and responsibility of recognizing and passing down different cultures should not be evaded.
Uploaded contains the raw data from questionnaires in Chinese and the pre-processed data translated into English. The pre-process data eleminated the invalid questionnaires.
本研究以中国高校英语作为外语(English as a Foreign Language, EFL)学习者的外语辨识能力与各类英语口音辨识能力为研究对象,将其作为跨文化交际能力的一项表征指标。本研究开发了一套电子调查问卷,包含13道外语辨识题与16道英语口音辨识题,并面向中国3所不同层级高校、覆盖4个学年的454名EFL学习者开展了调研。针对每一种语言或口音,均采用语音与视频配对题进行调研,且二者采用完全一致的语音素材。本研究通过对比分析,探究视觉辅助材料是否能够提升受试者的答题正确率。研究结果显示,中国EFL学习者的外语与口音整体辨识能力未达预期,整体正确率均低于50%;且视觉元素确实能够在部分语言与口音的辨识任务中提升答题正确率。本研究指出,在人工智能(Artificial Intelligence, AI)技术深度快速发展的时代,人类辨识与传承不同文化的能力与责任不应被忽视。本数据集附带的上传文件包含中文原始问卷数据与译为英文的预处理后数据,其中预处理数据已剔除无效问卷。
