Plants host a diversity of fungi collectively called mycobiota, which play key roles in plant vital functions. However, whether the mycobiota orginates from seed (vertical transmission) or soil (horizontal transmission) is poolry characterized. We sequenced the leaves and seed mycobiota of Haloxylon salicornicum, a common desert shrub. In vitro, we germinated seeds in in situ bulk soil either autoclaved or not and sequenced the mycobiota of seedling's leaves and roots.
