Reclassifying Ipomoea "austinii" as North American Ipomoea grandifolia

Ipomoea "austinii" was proposed to be a new morning glory species in series Batatas, which is very closely related to the sweetpotato. Genetic information from a wider sampling of Ipomoea species indicates that it is almost indistinguishable from Ipomoea grandifolia, a species that has only been described to be located in South America.

番薯属（Ipomoea）"austinii"曾被提议为番薯系（series Batatas）下的全新牵牛花物种，其与甘薯（sweetpotato）的亲缘关系极为密切。对番薯属物种开展更广范围取样所获得的遗传信息表明，该物种几乎与仅被记载分布于南美洲的大果番薯（Ipomoea grandifolia）难以区分。
