Mycorrhizal types of Chilean flora: unpublished data and grey literature

Contact: Dr. César Marín (cmarind@santotomas.cl)We present the mycorrhizal type (arbuscular mycorrhizal, ectomycorrhizal, ericoid mycorrhizal, orchid mycorrhizal, non mycorrhizal) of 296 plant species found in Chile (with a total of 341 occurrences), belonging to 94 botanical families. Each occurrence contains information on: plant habit (tree, shrub, perennial herb, etc.), origin (native or introduced), site name, Chilean administrative region, collection date, coordinates, and mycorrhizal type. The mycorrhizal type data comes from three sources (the last two constitute 'grey literature'):1. Stained roots located at Soil Ecology Laboratory, Universidad Santo Tomás, Máfil, Chile; this data has not been published elsewhere. 2. Methods.For recording the flora and preparing herbarium specimens: Only flowering specimens were collected to obtain suitable material for herbarium deposits and formal taxonomic identification. Preliminary species identification was performed using relevant taxonomic literature. For root collection, species were identified in the field through in situ recognition. The updated flora nomenclature is based on: Rodriguez, R., Marticorena, C., Alarcón, D., Baeza, C., Cavieres, L., Finot, V. L., ... & Marticorena, A. (2018). Catálogo de las plantas vasculares de Chile. Gayana Botánica, 75(1), 1-430. Mycorrhizal type: Root samples from five plants of each vascular species were collected and stored in labeled nylon bags. These were then transported to the laboratory and, using clean forceps, placed in airtight plastic jars for fixation in 50% alcohol. The fixed and stained roots were processed and subsequently examined under a stereomicroscope and an optical microscope to visualize the different types of mycorrhizae.
