Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease , previously referred to as Early Mortality Syndrome, is an emerging bacterial disease in shrimp. It has inflicted substantial economic losses in the shrimp industry, especially in Asian countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, but also South America and the United States. This AHPND is caused by specific strains of the Gram negative bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus carrying a conjugative plasmid of approximately 69 kbp in size, housing the pirABvp genes.
