This dataset is used in analyses of the macroevolution of primate vocal repertoire size interpreted in the associated manuscript titled "Evolution of Primate Vocal Repertoires: Vocal Systems as Embodied Capital for Mediating Within-group Conflict." The first tab of the data file contains the following information for each of 42 primates species: binomial nomenclature (contemporary), binomial nomenclature (contemporary alternative), binomial nomenclature (McComb & Semple 2005's), clade, family, research effort (based on the zoological record’s article count), log adult body mass (grams), maximum longevity (months), average endocranial volume (cubic centimeters), social group size, within-group conflict score, vocal repertoire size (McComb & Semple 2005's), reference for contemporary update to vocal repertoire size since McComb & Semple 2005 (if available), vocal repertoire size (contemporary update), species position (1=bottom) in ACR tree, caecum length (centimeters), colon length (centimeters), large intestine size (centimeters), and small intestine size (centimeters). We have marked NA where data was unavailable for the species. The second tab of the data file contains ancestral node estimates derived from ancestral character reconstructions (ACRs) conducted across the primate phylogeny. These values correspond to the reconstructed ancestral states for vocal repertoire size (not controlling for research effort) and within-group conflict (Z-scored) at internal nodes of the phylogenetic tree, and are the basis for Figure 3 in the associated manuscript (Panel A: reconstructed ancestral vocal repertoire size; Panel B: reconstructed ancestral within-group conflict). The third tab of the data file contains a data dictionary mapping the above variables to their column header names in the first tab.
