This soil respiration (CO2 flux) data was collected as part of Megan Schmidt’s on-going PhD Program at the Faculty of Environment, University of Waterloo under the supervision of Professor Maria Strack. The purpose of the research is to improve our estimates of carbon fluxes and pools in temperate swamps towards assessing the contributions of this ecosystem to regional peatland carbon cycle. In particular, bi-weekly soil respiration was measured from 3 plots that were installed along a transect in the Fletcher segment of Beverly swamp (43.366N, 80.12W) in Hamilton from June 17, 2022 to October 02, 2023. The measurement was completed with closed opaque chamber (24 cm x 20cm ) approach and directly analyzed with LI-COR portable greenhouse gas analyzer (L1-7810). Soil respiration rate at this site ranged from 0 to 29 gCm-2day-1 depending on the time of the year, with peak values in summer and the lowest in winter. This dataset is expected to support peatland carbon flux inventories in the temperate region of Canada and can also be used for validating carbon flux estimate of ecological models in the area.
