In 2017 a national assessment was carried out, which was commissioned by the Flemish government, to assess the extent to which students have achieved the attainment targets for technology at the end of the first grade of secondary education (A-stream). Data were collected through a written test covering the dimensions of 'understanding' and 'interpretation'. This test was administered to a representative sample of 2197 students from 70 Flemish secondary schools. In addition, a practical test for the dimension 'handling' was conducted. This test consisted of five newly developed assignments and one assignment copied from the national assessment on world orientation in primary education in 2015. Each assignment was completed by approximately 500 students. Finally, a bundle of clarification questions was administered to a subsample of 1041 students. Clarification questions are written open-ended questions that require students to provide their own examples and explanations. Tests were supplemented with student, parent and teacher background questionnaires. The questionnaires collected, among other things, information on general background characteristics of students and their families, students' and parents' attitudes, classroom practices, and teachers' didactic approaches. The response rates to these questionnaires were almost 100% for students and 94% for parents. Teachers were able to complete part of the questionnaire online, for which the response rate was 82%. For the paper part, the response rate was 90%.
