Litter surveys of beaches in the Ross Sea Region

Beach landings were made at several sites in the Ross Sea Region to establish the nature and quantity of seaborne and other litter on beaches and to determine if pelagic tar strands are onshore. The beaches were surveyed by checking for litter and samples of rocks specimens were collected for analysis. The beaches surveyed include Scott Island, Cape Adare, Possession Island, Foyn Island, Cape Hallett, Edisto Inlet, Gerlache Inlet, Markham Island, Inexpressible Island, Franklin Island, Depot Island, Cape Ross, Granite Harbour, Cape Roberts, Dunlop Island, Spike Cape, Beaufort Island, Cape Crozier, Cape Bird, Cape Royds, Cape Evans, New Harbour, Marble Point and McMurdo Station. For each site, the length of the beach examined and types of litter and comments were recorded.
