This project provides the genome assembly of Triticum aestivum cv. Renan, common name French bread wheat. The sequencing of the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genome has been difficult for many years due to its large size, one of the most important among the sequenced plant species. Many initiatives aiming to obtain a reference genome have been launched in recent years, starting with a chromosome-based approach and ending with a chromosome-scale assembly published in 2018. It was a huge effort and the result of a combination of short read-based whole genome sequencing with many other resources generated on flow sorted chromosomes. Here, we report on an optimized, low-cost, long read-based assembly of the genome of the French bread wheat cultivar Renan generated by combining long-reads sequencing and long-range information. Using nanopore long reads generated using the PromethION device, we provide the most contiguous and complete assembly of a bread wheat genome to date, a resource that will be valuable for the crop community and will facilitate the rapid selection of agronomically important traits.
