The little yellow-shouldered Mesoamerican bat (Sturnira parvidens) is a species of leaf-nosed bat found in Mexico and Central America. The bat is most commonly found in the sub-canopy or understory of tropical forests, close to water or agricultural land. It is more common in recently formed secondary forests, and thus can serve as a useful indicator of forest disturbance (from Wikipedia entry). This sample of a male individual found in Orange Walk, Lamanai, Belize was procured by Nancy Simmons to generate a high-quality reference genome for Bat1K and the Bat Biology Foundation. Sequencing was conducted at Paratus Sciences and genome assembly was conducted at the Vertebrate Genome Lab (VGL) at the Rockefeller University, led by Erich D. Jarvis, Giulio Formenti, and Jennifer Balacco.
