Engineering a monocyte-mediated drug delivery system for regenerative medicine applications

Over the past few decades, the development of advanced drug delivery systems has significantly transformed the way that medicines are administered, improving patient outcomes. However, many of these systems still face complex challenges, including adverse immune responses, side effects and insufficient drug delivery to diseased sites. To address these problems, we designed a novel drug delivery system that combines monocytes (a type of immune cells) and antibody fusion protein for targeted drug delivery to the site of injury. We found that the designed delivery system greatly enhanced drug delivery to the skin wounds and accelerate wound healing in a diabetic mouse model. We anticipate that this system would hold great potential for future clinical applications.
