Oligobacter sp. strain SKA48. Oligobacter sp. strain SKA48 was isolated from seawater obtained at a depth of 2 to 5 meters from the Skagerrak Sea in the north Atlantic Ocean. This organism is a member of the SAR11 group of bacteria. Oligobacter sp. strain SKA48 is small, slow growing, and unable to form colonies on agar medium. In addition, this organism has been to shown to have a highly efficient nutrient uptake mechanism. These characteristics may allow this organism to better exploit the low concentrations of dissolved and particulate organic matter present in the open ocean, and may account for the ubiquity of Oligobacter sp. and other members of the SAR11 clade in ocean waters. This organism will be used for comparative genomics with other marine microorganisms.
