Addition of intravenous midazolam to lignocaine hydrochloride for peribulbar block among people undergoing cataract surgery: A longitudinal study

Aim:
To determine the efficacy of intravenous midazolam addition to lignocaine hydrochloride as an adjuvant to peribulbar block
Methods:
A longitudinal, time-bound study with detailed history, anterior segment evaluation (preoperatively and postoperatively) with applicable patients divided into two groups: one group (A) received intravenous midazolam 5 minutes prior to peribulbar block, the other group (B) received only peribulbar block. Every patient received instruction on how to measure their anxiety using the Global Anxiety Visual Analogue Scale, and their pain using the Wong Baker Faces Pain Rating scale. Vital baseline measures like heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation were collected.
Results:
A total of 88 patients were included in the study. Group A and Group B had 44 participants each. Group A noted lower heart rate, lower systolic BP, lower respiratory rate, along with reduction in pain and anxiety that was found to be statistically significant, as compared to Group B.
Conclusion:
Incorporating intravenous midazolam prior to local anesthetic in peribulbar block results in a notable decrease in patient anxiety and pain perception throughout the treatment, without generating any substantial negative effects on the cardiovascular system.
