The Shikoku originates from Japan, possessing several physical characteristics of an outdoor or hunting dog. The dog is square-built, with pricked triangular ears on its wedge-shaped head and thick curled tail. It has a thick double coat with colors such as black and tan, sesame, and red sesame.
