VPRS 12163 Register of Loans to Mining Companies

The Mining Development Act 1896 and subsequent amendments provided for the development of mining and mining technology in Victoria.The Act allowed registered mining companies to borrow money from Treasury for the establishment and maintenance of mines in Victoria, and the purchase of mining equipment. Mining companies were required to repay the debt and additional interest with periodical repayments over an agreed time period, often mortgaging the mine itself as security.This series consists of a register of loans established under the Act and its subsequent amendments.
