M2 is one of six meteorological stations in the Zackenberg and Store Sødal Valley. Data from the station is found under meteorology (wind, temperature and relative humidity, short wave and long wave radiation, as well as NDVI), soil properties (soil moisture and soil heat flux) and snow properties (snow depth). M2 is located on a south facing slope in side the ZEROCALM-2 grid, in which active layer is monitored. The vegetation underneath the mast is dominated by salix arctica. Measurements at this station were initiated on the 5th of August 2003. The meteological data at M2 is recorded every half hour. Between 2003-2012 data was recorded using a CR10x campbell scientific data logger. In August 2012 this was changed to a CR1000 data logger. As the station is situated on a southfacing slope (dominating leeward side during winter in Zackenberg), the station has been covered in snow during several winters. E.g. during the winter 2014-15, whereafter the mast was tilted slightly towards the south. The tilt was corrected for on the 5th of August 2015 and we estimate that the tilt resulted in incoming shortwave radiation measurements of ~5 % more compared to earlier years. Unfortunately the tilt cannot be corrected for, as the correct inclination is unknown. Blank cells are missing values due to snow burial, power problems, broken sensors, data logger change, etc. Major data fall outs are: 2004: 2004.01.27 - 2004-02-08 and then every day until 2004.02.18 due to low battery voltage. 2005: 2005-01-06 - 2005.05.20 (except for two recordings in february), because the mast was out of level due to the weight of snow. 2006: 2006.02.11 - 2006.02.21 due to low battery voltage. 2008: 2008.02.10 - 2008.02.13 due to burial in snow and again from 2008.02.24 - 2008-05-13. During this burial the mast was compltely broken and all sensors that require the mast to be in level in order to give accurate measurements are missing until a new mast was installed 2008.08.13. Windsensors were also damaged during this burial, replaced in 2009. 2009: 2009.02.08 - 2009.03.24 daily dropouts due to low battery voltage. 2010: 2010-01-28 - 2010.05.29 due to dead internal battery. 2011: Several holes in October, due to batteryproblems, station dies 2011.11.17 due to low battery voltage, starts again 2012.04.14. 2012: 2011.11.17 - 2012.04.14 the station was also completely buried in snow and wind cup anemomter broken. Data from 2012.04.19 - 2012.05.02 is missing due to battery problems. And 2012.08.18 - 2012.08.25 due to data logger change. 2013: 2013.04.27 - 2013.04.30 due to problems with memorycard. 2017: Wind vanes A100R (measuring wind speed and gust) and W200P (wind direction and standard deviation) were exchanged with Young Alpine wind monitor (05103-45 Wind monitor), as well as temperature and relative humidity, April 29th. 2018: 2018-02 - 2018-06: due to snow burial. Meteorology:Meteorology GeoBasis Zackenberg:The GeoBasis monitoring programme focuses on selected abiotic characteristics in order to describe the state of Greenlandic terrestrial environments and their potential feedback effects in a changing climate. Monitored plot data is up-scaled to a landscape level and is used to improve ecosystem models to be able to quantify these feedback mechanisms. The GeoBasis programme provides an active response to recommendations in international assessments such as ACIA and SWIPA; and is continuously being adapted based on AMAP and other international founded recommendations. Furthermore, the GeoBasis programme is directly involved in several international networks and research projects (e.g. the Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring (CALM) programme, the Nordic Centre of Excellence DEFROST, the Danish Centre of Excellence CENPERM, the EU-projects PAGE21 and INTERACT, and the Arctic Research Centre at Aarhus University). The GeoBasis programme is divided into a number of sub-groups, including:
