We created this dataset from an inventory of the enslaved people on the Amity Hall Plantation in Saint Thomas-in-the-East Parish, Surrey County, Jamaica. The inventory was recorded as part of an 1820 agreement (with an 1828 watermark) to lease the enslaved people at Amity Hall. To make it clear who comprised the enslaved population on the plantation, the inventory listed enslaved people by an original name, baptismal name, color (negro, mulatto, quadroon, and sambo), age, and origin (creole, meaning born in Jamaica, or African). In addition, there is a remarks column. The inventory claims to list 299 enslaved people, but there are only 298 recorded in it. The document is available online through the New York Public Library.
