Replication Data for: Pipeline Diversity via Career Diversity: Lessons from a Research Experience for Undergraduates Program

Fostering diversity in political science is important. Undergraduate research experiences, coupled with an emphasis on career diversity, hold the potential to increase relevant knowledge and buoy inclinations toward pursuing a PhD among students from diverse backgrounds. We describe components of a US National Science Foundation-funded research experiences for undergraduates (REU) program that highlighted career diversity. We find evidence of positive shifts in awareness of career opportunities for those with doctoral degrees alongside sustained interest in pursuing a PhD. We conclude an emphasis on career diversity can be a useful component of efforts to shape students’ attitudes and inclinations toward a PhD.

推动政治学领域的多元化发展具有重要意义。本科生科研经历结合对职业多元化的重视，有望提升不同背景学生的相关专业知识储备，并增强其攻读博士学位（PhD）的意愿。本文阐述了由美国国家科学基金会（US National Science Foundation）资助的、突出职业多元化的本科生科研经历（Research Experiences for Undergraduates，简称REU）项目的核心组成部分。研究结果显示，参与项目的学生对博士毕业生的职业发展机遇的认知出现了积极转变，且其攻读博士学位的兴趣持续不减。本研究最终得出结论：重视职业多元化，可作为引导学生形成攻读博士学位的态度与意愿的有效组成部分。
