BACKGROUND: the Ice Mosaic installation reveals new interpretations of Antarctica that emerge through recognisable personal jewellery and souvenir object. This research explores and interprets a jeweller's personal experience of Antarctica. Although Antarctica has no permanent residents, it accommodates a number of utilitarian buildings, predominantly research bases, and a small number of huts. In this installation Haydon experiments with the gallery space to create layered installation in which to view the objects from beyond the gallery. A small 'Window gallery', is used to make some of the works available to the public 24 hours a day CONTRIBUTION Echoes of Antarctic manmade structures and objects are found in the works as elements of form, applied imagery and connecting components. The Gallery's Jacqui Knowles says, "Paradoxically, in order to achieve the effects of ice and snow, each piece undergoes multiple kiln firings, until the desired finish is achieved. Despite their diminutive scale, and partially due to the luminescent surfaces, these works cleverly hint at an environment that is magnificent and harsh, as well as grand in scale." SIGNIFICANCE Objectspace, with major funding from Creative New Zealand, is a public gallery dedicated to positioning making in the fields of craft, applied arts and design, within a range of cultural, economic and social frameworks, to provoke new assessments about works and practices. It creates, 'new opportunities for outstanding practitioners, critical discourse and professional development'. Haydon captures the essence of an elemental beauty, deftly expressed through the restrained use of colour, simple forms, and attention to surface detail. Haydon's research was first presented in the 2009 exhibition programme (Ice Terrane) and the evolution of her work was again sought to illustrate the power of the craft object in exploring and connecting with human experience and place three years later in this solo exhibition.
