Genioglossus EMG metrics from male Sprague-Dawley rats during electrical stimulation after C2 hemisection and C1 transection injury

STUDY PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand how electrical stimulation at the spinal level C4, targeting the phrenic motor nucleus, affects hypoglossal motor output under varying levels of injury. DATA COLLECTED: In six 3-6 month old urethane anesthetized male Sprague Dawley rats, EMG recording electrodes were placed on the base of the tongue, and stimulating electrodes on the dorsal surface of C4. Rats first underwent a right-sided C2 hemisection before undergoing short bouts of varying amplitude electrical stimulation timed during the breath, between breaths, and throughout the respiratory cycle as determined by hypoglossal EMG. Shortly after completion of stimulation under C2HS conditions, rats then underwent a complete C1 transection, and the stimulus bouts were repeated. We evaluated changes in hypoglossal EMG amplitude during and after stimulation bouts, as well as the degree of EMG entrainment to stimulation pulses via stimulus triggered averages of the raw EMG signals.
